Eyes peered at me as I walked through the door

each Pair glancing away from their conversation

waiting, expecting my Face to falter

children, too young to understand

amused themselves with my musty toys

their mothers desperately trying

to move their laughter out of my reach

the Man with black hair stumbled toward me

He fumbled, pretending to start small talk

Her favorite Yellow Saucer shattered

the Pieces scattered across the checkered tiles

Eyes scampered over the Pieces

and realized

They could never be put back together.
